Often, because of demands of the D&T curriculum - kit is expensive and meted out in short order to pupils in the form of "kits" to process passing certain exams.
Maybe a more organic way of working would be to take things like Arduino and Processing and work in groups on collaborative projects to achieve the same outcomes?
